Speakeasy
12 W Elm St
Subtle, smooth, and classy.
I really liked this spot. There are plenty of dive bars in the area, and a few clubs, but behind a very unassuming door next to a tiny neon sign, you walk into a whole new world.
The Sparrow is a small bar, but it's got lots of bar space and a few table spots. The clientele were a bit better dressed than me, but nobody was judging - I had a great time and the drink I got (which has unfortunately slipped my mind) was delicious.
The music was low, and you could hear everyone just fine. It's a small, slightly hidden, classy spot that starkly contrasts most of the other spots in the area.
It's just barely hidden enough that I classify it as a speakeasy, but regardless, it's definitely worth a visit.
I enjoyed it a lot - and you will too. :) You can check out their website at: http://www.sparrowchicago.com/
P.S. I went again recently, with a small group, and had an "interesting" experience.
My group was a little rowdy (not overly so) but I guess they don't like the boat being rocked. They told us they heard one of us vomiting in the bathroom, took away our drinks as a result, and then demanded we leave. Our whole group was sober on arrival, so we assume we were framed as an excuse to get us out the door since we didn't fit their aesthetic.
No harm done, it's their business and they serve who they want - but if our assumptions are correct, you might want to behave while you're at Sparrow. ;)
